The client wanted a bold, minimal desert retreat for their family. Exposed concrete and lots of glass were their only requests. The site is relatively flat with no features of note, but opens up to expansive views of the Mohave desert with Joshua Tree National Park in the distance. We wanted to open up to these views from the living space and main bedroom while creating privacy from the road. Public and private spaces adjoin to form a T, creating the opportunity for a private, sheltered patio off the living area as well as an inviting yet private public entryway.
Insulated, board-formed concrete walls transect the house, separating private from public spaces and defining bathrooms and the fireplace. Thermally-modified pine siding adds warmth to the exterior, and the graying of the wood in time will help the home settle into its surroundings.
