GREENWICH ST RESIDENCE  BOSTON, MA

RENOVATION, 1998

2 bed · 1 bath · 990 SF

This project was the beginning of Hundred Mile House. It was a gut renovation of a 1890's working-class brick town house in Boston's South End neighborhood. A total of 990 SF spread over 3 levels and 7 rooms meant very small spaces with a lot of space eaten up by circulation.

We opened up all the rooms to a central open staircase design lit from above by a skylight, and removed all the doors. The loft-like approach made the space appear and feel twice it's actual size. Exposing original construction details, like the rough hewn floor joists and brick walls, gave the space warmth and contrasted the ultra modern crisp white walls and lack of traditional adornments like baseboards.

In addition to design the renovation, we also did the bulk of the demolition and construction work ourselves. This hands-on approach is evident in every project we work on to this day.
