DEEPWELL II PALM SPRINGS, CA
RENOVATION, INTERIOR AND LANDSCAPE DESIGN, 2023
3 bed · 3 bath · 2000 SF
This was a complete renovation to a 1955 home in the Deepwell neighborhood of Palm Springs. Most of the original layout and some unique architectural details were preserved, including the brick fireplace and original steel patio door in the dining room. Once an Airbnb rental, HMH refreshed the home for full-time residency. All new finishes and fixtures, custom walnut millwork, and the reconfiguration of a guest suite made the home more comfortable and functional.
An extensive landscape overhaul defined outdoor rooms for lounging and entertaining large groups, and a new west-facing front enclosed garden opened up the interior to the view while maintaining privacy. An old-growth olive tree was brought in as a focal point and to separate and define the outdoor spaces.
Interior design highlights include a wall of custom-milled walnut doors in the hallway to rationalize what once was a “hallway of doors”, a natural stone countertop and backsplash that bring a hint of Pacific Ocean to the desert, tadelakt plaster walls in a guest bath that create a spa-like experience for guests, and a black roman clay finish in the primary bedroom that creates a moody room for reprieve from the intense desert sun.
