After years of looking for the right space and partner, the owners of Provincetown’s iconic Joe Coffee teamed up with HMH to design and build their first West Coast outpost. The interior design took inspiration from their seaside East Coast location and merged it with the mid-century heritage of Palm Springs in a historic Howard Lapham building – his original architectural studio in fact. The resulting interior and exterior spaces are a fun, modern twist on their East Coast casual vibe with a subtle nod to some of Lapham’s signature elements.

The program included a full bakery for their fresh baked goods, so our work started with organizing the space around a full kitchen and a comprehensive understanding of their workflows at the back bar and barista station. We’re proud of the resulting space plan in how it eliminates bottle necks and inefficiencies you often see in smaller coffee shops.
