Hundred Mile House leads all phases of architectural design and development for residential renovation and new construction. We’ll explore design options that best suit you, your property and your budget, and then guide everything that’s necessary to get you to the finish line. We know trustworthy tradespeople to build your project, have access to suppliers with great materials and furniture, and we’ll work closely with you to make sure you stay on budget and on time.

The spaces we create are comfortable and intuitive, with thoughtful consideration for the reality of how they will be used; constant guests? Kid-friendly? Serene and private? Your space must support your life, not get in your way.

Your home can be your escape; somewhere you’re willing to drive a hundred miles to get to. We bring beauty, inspiration, and celebration to all of our work; these are things every home can have, small or large.

Hundred Mile House is a residential architectural design practice founded in 2006 by Duane Smith. He’s an award-winning industrial designer with a passion for innovative, beautiful environments. Duane had a unique privilege to study sustainable architecture at the Bauhaus in Germany during the early days of its rebirth. There, he established his appreciation for modernism and design for the masses. After 20 years as an entrepreneur and designer of everything from lighting to apparel to homes, he brings a breadth of knowledge and a unique perspective to residential architecture.

Starting with a brownstone rehab in Boston’s South End, followed by a desire to create a weekend escape within a couple of hours’ drive drew him to the natural beauty and rich architectural heritage of Wellfleet on Cape Cod. Then, a loft in LA and a retreat in the desert of ultra-modernist Palm Springs, finally seeded the idea of ‘Hundred Mile House’: helping others realize their own dreams of escape and inspiration, whether as primary residences, vacation homes, or investment properties.

Duane was born in rural Newfoundland, Canada, dabbling with building blocks and dreaming of houses as a tot. In his late teens he moved to Ontario to attend design school, and then on to Germany to study sustainable architecture at the Bauhaus in Dessau.

In addition to his award-winning product design work, he has completed several design-build residential and retail projects across the United States and Canada.

Duane’s design work is contemporary yet comfortable, with thought and sensitivity not only to his clients’ desires, but also to their time and money.
